ISTANBUL—Turkish police investigating Carlos Ghosn’s passage through Turkey after escaping from Japan have searched for fingerprints on the box in which the former chief of the Renault-Nissan alliance was loaded onto a plane in Osaka, according to people familiar with the probe.
Another photo obtained by The Wall Street Journal shows the container afterwards. The empty box, together with a smaller one filled with loud speakers, was found at Istanbul’s Ataturk airport inside the long-range business jet in which Mr. Ghosn was ferried to Turkey late last month, the people said. At Ataturk, Mr. Ghosn shifted to another business jet and flew to Beirut, where he is expected to give a news conference on Wednesday.
The larger box, generally used for concert equipment, had holes drilled at the bottom to ensure Mr. Ghosn could breathe while he was being whisked through security checks at Osaka’s Kansai airport, people familiar with the matter said. The boxes have been removed from the plane and stored in a hangar, one of the people said.
Acting on a complaint by Turkish aircraft operator MNG Jet Havacilik AS that its jets were used illegally, Turkish prosecutors have charged five people, a company manager and four pilots, with migrant smuggling.
MNG Jet’s complaint targets any person who may have played a role in the alleged illegal use of the aircraft. That could lead Turkish prosecutors to examine Mr. Ghosn’s role in the chartering of the business jets.
In Japan, Mr. Ghosn was out on bail and facing charges of financial crimes. He has denied the charges and has previously said he would fight them in court.
